Is Call To Action (CTA) ‘Rooted In Church Teaching’?
According to the first subtitle of "A Brief History of Call To Action," located on CTA’s Web Page (as of July 24, 1999), CTA alleges it is ‘rooted in Church teaching.’
The "…Brief History…." furthermore describes CTA as a "response to the challenge of the Second Vatican Council, held between 1962 and 1965, for all members to ‘scrutinize the signs of the times’ and respond in the light of the Gospel."
What the Vatican II document actually says, and CTA doesn’t say, is the following:
"At all times, the Church carries the responsibility of reading the signs of the times and of interpreting them in the light of the Gospel, if it is to carry out its task" (
Gaudium et Spes, element 4)What CTA won’t tell you is that it is the Magisterium of the pastors of the Church that is to do this ‘interpreting’ [
Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) elements 85-87; 2032-2038;]CTA likewise speaks out of context when it says that "in 1971 Pope Paul VI emphasized that it is the job of the laity, who have received the primary Call to Action to create a more just world."
IN CONTRAST, here is what Paul VI actually said w/r this:
"It is to all Christians that we address a fresh and insistent Call to Action. In our encyclical on the Development of Peoples we urged that all should set themselves to the task: ‘Laymen should take up as their own proper task the renewal of the temporal order. If the role of the hierarchy is to teach and to interpret authentically the norms of morality to be followed in this matter, it belongs to the laity, without waiting passively for orders and directives, to take the initiatives freely and to infuse a Christian spirit into the mentality, customs, laws and structures of the community in which they live’" (Octogesima Adveniens, element 48)
What is the reason for CTA’s implicit disregard for the Magisterium in taking such statements out of context?? Perhaps a look at some key elements of CTA’s 1990 "Call for Reform" will help:
In other words, CTA seeks an overturning of the Magisterial teachings and directives concerning contraception, abortion, priestly celibacy and the male ministerial priesthood, among others.
To openly dissent, as alluded to above, in matters proposed by the Magisterium is, by definition, schismatic
(cf CCC, element 2089). It was for reasons like this that CTA members were notified that they should consider themselves ex-communicated if they persisted in such activity in the Lincoln, Nebraska DioceseCTA IS
NOT ‘ROOTED IN CHURCH TEACHING’Furthermore, to ignore the importance and supremacy of the Magisterium, as CTA seems to want to do, is to ignore a truth stated clearly in the subject title of Chapter III of Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium ):
The Church IS Hierarchical.
That is an inescapable fact, just as certainly as Heaven has many mansions and "offices." (cf Matthew 20:20-28; Revelation 4:4, 20:4; John 14:2)
If the Church were to be governed in the manner proposed by CTA and other groups who signed the "Charter of Rights of Catholics in the Church" and whom are also members of the "We Are Church" Coalition, the Church would then itself be
Truth can impose itself on the mind of man only in virtue of its own truth, which wins over the mind with both gentleness and power (Dignitatus Humanae, element 1)
The agenda proposed by CTA is schismatic in nature, because it is actually rooted—however stealthily concealed—in un–TRUTH, selfish, carnal passions and sin (cf CCC 817; 2 Peter Ch 2; Jude v18-19)
DO NOT BE DECEIVED by CTA’s attempts to "Renew" your (Arch)Diocese or Church, or promote ‘justice.’ Theirs is a justice that has been "divorced" from Mercy, because they have forsaken the Truth that otherwise holds the two together (cf Psalm 85:11; Jeremiah 31:22; Dives in Misericordia, element 97; Revelation 2:1-7, 18-29; 3:7-13)
You are encouraged to find out for yourself what CTA (and the groups in league with CTA) are up to. Doing so can enable you to better understand the types of issues and motives that are driving some of the efforts undertaken by CTA.
