San Antonio Mocks John Paul II (cf
Ezekiel 33:30-33)NOTE: It is worth noting that the situation in the San Antonio Archdiocese has improved markedly since this article was written in August, 2001, and most of the irregularities have been corrected
"...your countrymen are talking about you along the walls and in the doorways of the houses. They say to one another, 'come and hear the latest word that comes from the Lord.' My people come to you as people always do; they sit down before you and here your words, but they will not obey them, for lies are on their lips and their desires are fixed on dishonest gain. For them you are only a ballad singer, with a pleasant voice and a clever touch. They listen to your words, but they will not obey them. But when it comes---and it is surely coming!---they shall know that there was a prophet among them." cf Ezekiel 33: 30-33 |
On September 13, 1987, Pope John Paul II visited San Antonio (his only stop in Texas) as part of his second visit (as Pope) to the US that also took him to Miami, Columbia (South Carolina), New Orleans, Phoenix, several cities in California, and Detroit
As for his visit to San Antonio, he spoke at these events:
Unfortunately, a quick evaluation of key statements made at those venues suggests the extent to which his message either fell on deaf ears, and/or was thereafter subjected to either mute voices, and lame hands and feet. On the other hand, it is quite possible that his message failed to be implemented largely through the hardness of heart of those most able to do something about it, namely, the designated deputies--both lay and clerical---at the Chancery and at individual church communities ("parishes") that have been entrusted by Archbishop Patrick Flores with implementing various Magisterial (read "Papal") teachings and directives throughout the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Such hardness of hearts can, of course produce the effect of deafness, blindness, and consequently "muteness" and "lameness."
Content and Authenticity of Catechesis
Catechesis has an objective content. We cannot invent the faith as we go along. Every baptized person has the right to receive the authentic teaching of the Church regarding doctrinal and moral aspects of Christian life......Every catechist must sincerely and reverently be able to apply to himself or herself the words of Jesus: 'My doctrine is not my own, it comes from him who sent me' (cf
I appeal to all priests---pastors, associate pastors and all concerned---to the permanent deacons, and to the religious and lay leaders to do everything possible, working together, to serve the family as effectively as possible. This involves proclaiming the whole truth about marriage and family life: the exclusive nature of conjugal love, the indissolubility of marriage; the Church's full teaching on the transmission of life and the respect due human life from the moment of conception until natural death; the rights and duties of parents with regard to the education of their children, especially their religious and moral education, including proper sex education
element 5,
For the most part, catechetics in San Antonio have suffered the same fate as elsewhere, in which bizarre doctrines, which even non-Catholics would find offensive, have been condoned by the Archdiocesan Catechetical Center, which has invited several notorious dissenters and revisionists to their annual Catechetical Conference (and also at other times throughout the year). This is in addition to what many Pastors have done and said at the Parish level.
Please check the links given below for some examples of some of the non-sense foisted on people in the San Antonio Archdiocese:

So-called "Cafeteria Catholics" would do well, perhaps, to heed the message (in the summer of 2001) on the marquee in front of the Ventura Church of Christ on FM 78 just outside Converse:
"We don't change the message. It changes us."
Like I've said in other places at this Eingedi website, a non-Catholic of average intelligence and goodwill would take one look at some of the non-sense being taught in Catechetical programs and workshops, and say, "this is nuts." Unfortunately, when such non-sense appears to have been tolerated and possibly encouraged by the Head Catechist in the Archdiocese, (ie, the Archbishop--cf
CIC/83 775; Christus Dominus, elements 12-14), then some non-Catholics could easily be misled into thinking that such non-sense is what the Church actually teaches and has taught for centuries. Is it any wonder that some sects can then say, with apparent justification, that the so-called "Whore of Babylon" teaches blasphemous doctrines?? Unfortunately, "whore" could indeed be an all too appropriate word to use, since the so-called "Catholic" revisionists have prostituted themselves with false doctrines (cf Revelation 2:20-22) that approach the genre of fables (cf Galations 1:7; 1 Timothy 1:4, 4:7; 2 Peter 1:16), political-economic ideologies and "liberation" theologies, and a bogus (as opposed to authentic---click HERE to see what "authentic" entails) eco-spirituality (and the closely related, wiccan and lesbian-tinged eco-feminism).Fidelity to the Magisterium
In order for your preaching to bear fruit in the lives of those whom you will serve, you will have to nourish in your own mind and heart a real internal adherence to the Magisterium of the Church. For, as the Council reminded us, "the task of priests is not to teach their own wisdom but God's word, and to summon all people urgently to conversion and to holiness" (cf
....to those of you who are responsible for the formation of candidates for the priesthood.....it is crucial that you yourselves be steeped in sound doctrine, pastoral experience and holiness of life. Of great importance is your attitude of faith, and particularly your personal example of filial love for the Church, as well as your loyal adherence to her authentic ordinary Magisterium (cf
Lumen Gentium, element 25)Please check the links given below to see what kind of attitude has actually been exhibited toward the Magisterium:

The Sacrament of Penance
Confession is an act of honesty and courage, an act of entrusting ourselves beyond sin, to the mercy of a loving and forgiving God

To young people: It is a mark of greatness to be able to say: I have made a mistake.
element 6,
Potential for an authentic and vibrant renewal of the whole Catholic Church through the more faithful use of the Sacrament of Penance is immeasurable. It flows directly from the loving heart of God Himself.
element 6,
The state of the sacrament of penance in each parish and in each local Church is a good indication of the authentic maturity of the faith of the priests and the people
element 7,
In different parts of the world there is a great neglect of the sacrament of penance
element 6,
Vatican II never intended that this Sacrament be less practiced.
element 6,
I ask all my brother Bishops and Priests to do everything possible to make the administration of this sacrament a primary aspect of their service to God's people
element 6,
Priests who are the ministers of God's grace in this sacrament should make certain that the sacrament is conveniently available in its authorized forms
element 7,
Absolution must be individual and not collective.

You can check the link given below to see only one example of the sorry state that the administration of this Sacrament has fallen in the Archdiocese of San Antonio:
General Absolution Protested at St. Matthew's During Holy Week
Given that the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Penance was the central message of John Paul II's Sunday sermon at Westover Hills, failure to heed this particular message is perhaps the gravest sin of omission and, in some cases, commission, of any to be committed. Is it any wonder that this Archdiocese as a whole has become, in many ways, a "structure of sin" (cf
Reconciliatio et Paenitentia, element 16), and perhaps more a hindrance than a help toward a person's continued conversion? On San Fernando Cathedral

Given the questionable nature of what has at times occurred in San Fernando Cathedral, not to mention the plans that Liturgical "Design" Consultant Richard Vosko has w/r its so-called "renovation," this part of John Paul II's message was likewise ignored or forgotten in large part. The Council stressed a fundamental difference between ordained priesthood and the priesthood of the baptized.
element 3,
You will be in a position to encourage the lay people to fulfill that mission which is uniquely their own in those situations and places in which the Church can be the salt of the earth only through them
element 5,
This activity (cf
Lumen Gentium, element 41) of the laity constitutes a specific contribution to the Body of Christ. Yours is another charism, a different gift to be lived differently, so that, in true diversity, there may be a real unity in the work of service. All service has its first moment in God
element 1,
Poverty, certainly, is often a matter of materials deprivation. But it is also a matter of spiritual impoverishment, the lack of human liberties, and the result of any violation of human rights and human dignity.
element 4,
The organizational and institutional response to needs....is not sufficient in itself.....'Institutions are very important and indispensable; nevertheless, no institution can, by itself, replace the human heart, human compassion, human love or human initiative when it is a question of dealing with the sufferings of another. This refers to physical sufferings, but it is even more true when it is a question of the many kinds of moral suffering and when it is primarily the soul that is suffering (cf
Salvifici Doloris, element 29).'...in the necessary organizational and institutional response to needs, it is essential to avoid reducing human beings to mere units or categories of political or social planning and action. Such a process leads to new and other forms of anonymity and alienation.
element 5,
....personal choices, operating through structures,.......propagate situations of poverty, oppression and misery......overcoming "social" sin and reforming the social order itself must begin with the conversion of our hearts
element 5,
To many people, mercy and conversion may seem like poor tools for solving social problems. Some are tempted to accept ideologies that use force to carry out their programs and impose their vision
element 6,
Love can overcome great obstacles, and God's love can totally transform the world. As the Church tries to express Christian solidarity in generous service, she also wishes to draw attention to the importance of worship and prayer and their relationship to service. In looking to the example of Christ, the Church can never forget that all Christ's actions were accompanied by prayer......'Only a worshiping and praying Church can show herself sufficiently sensitive to the needs of the sick, the suffering, the lonely---especially in the great urban centers---and the poor everywhere....'
element 7,
Unfortunately, far too many church communities in the Archdiocese of San Antonio have aligned themselves with political organizations, such as Communities Organized for Public Service (COPS), which have ideologies perilously similar (some would dare say identical) to "liberation theology." Sometimes, these ideologies have been woven into the Small Faith Community (SFC) structures. This is unfortunate, because the SFC concept, in and of itself, has been shown to be a promising way of the future for the Church [cf
Redemptoris Missio, element 51: also click HERE to visit the website for, sad to say, one of only a few SFC movements apparently doing things the "right" way, using the 'criteria of ecclesiality' (cf Christifideles Laici, element 31)]. Furthermore, the attitude exhibited toward the laity by bureaucrats (both clerical and lay) in the Chancery, the Deaneries, as well as at the Parish level, concerning the proper teaching of morals and doctrine in Religious Education programs in Parishes and in the Catholic school system, reflects anything but one of justice and compassion. They have in fact established a "structure of sin" (cf Reconciliatio et Paenitentia, element 16). This same attitude, w/r abuses in the Liturgy, also militates against a proper education for justice [cf Convenientes ex universo, Section III ('The Practice of Justice')].As has happened elsewhere, there has been a tendency toward a clericalization of the laity, in conjunction with a laicization of the clergy. Our blurring of those roles (click HERE for a local example of this), especially w/r the Liturgy, has hindered and delayed all of us in undertaking the real work at hand --and hence our real spiritual and personal growth---which occurs once we leave the "Temple" (cf
Luke 2:51-52). As a result of having to respond to efforts to pervert, for example, the authentic implementation of the Liturgical renewal engendered by the seminal Vatican II document Sacrosanctum Concilium (one of the first documents issued by the Council), we have lost valuable time in authentically implementing the harder exhortations of, for example, Gaudium et Spes (one of the final documents issued by the Council). Instead, like a bunch of children who have just discovered a new pastime, certain individuals have seemingly engaged in a childish game of "let's play Church"----but only if they get to be the Priest, or if not that, then at least the Director of Liturgy, or the dreaded DRE. Otherwise, they don't want to play at all, and they go off and pout, or proceed to play their own game with anyone else similarly childish enough who cares to join them. The fact of the matter is that, Chapter III of another key Vatican II document, Lumen Gentium, clearly states that 'The Church IS Hierarchical.'Through the distortion of timeless Church teachings, particularly those pertaining to sexual matters as well as the nature of God Himself, and as a result of an incomplete (ie, in-authentic) understanding of God, His Law, and also His Love, we have been impeded in that authentic self-giving, necessary in navigating through the "frontier" of the harder exhortations of
Gaudium et Spes. This slouching along with inauthentic teaching produces an inauthentic diversity (chaos, put in other words), and thus anything but true unity. Consequently, "unity in the work of service"----the theme of John Paul II's 1987 US visit---has been hindered beyond comprehension. We thus continue to withhold in some way a complete gift of ourselves, thus making a part of all of us weak (1 Corinthians 12:26; Ephesians 4:25). We are instead allowed and possibly forced to hide behind institutions established upon a false or incomplete understanding of ourselves, God, and His Church (cf Dominum et Vivificantem, elements 58-62). Hence, lurking just below the surface, is an unfathomable depth of individual and collective desperation and alienation in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, as well as many other Dioceses in the United States. Indeed, there is "no peace" (cf Jeremiah 6:14), no matter how "attractive" they try to make the phony facade of a superficial communion (cf Novo Millennio Ineunte, elements 43-45).If you are alarmed and displeased with the proliferation of any of the non-sense described above, as well as the underlying attitudes and motives driving it, the following individuals should be contacted:
