Abortion Supporter Anthony T. Padovano in San Antonio (Saint Matthew's)

Anthony Padovano, a laicized Priest who founded CORPUS (clickHERE for further information), had been invited to speak, on two successive evenings in late November, 2000, at Saint Matthew's Catholic Church in San Antonio, as part of its Advent Mission. Much to his credit Msr. Mike Yarbrough, Pastor at St. Matthew's, disinvited Padovano once he became aware of his heterodox track record, given that Padavano has a world-wide reputation for promoting dissent with Church teachings on abortion, contraception, women priests and married priests, disunity in general and ideas that come perilously close to heresy (click HERE for information). There is a pretty good chance that his talks in San Antonio will likewise involve some heterodox ideas.

Anthony Padovano and CORPUS advocate opening the priesthood to married men, contending that this would solve the Priest shortage. Their stated objective, however, is deceptive, since the organization is populated by former (laicized) priests who left in order to get married (cf Jude 6-7), but now want their faculties re-instated (Padovano is one of those). That is the real objective of the organization, not the ordination of already-married Catholic laymen.

In accordance with 1 Corinthians 7:17-24, the Church, either in the East or in the West, has never allowed previously-ordained men to contract marriage. ON THE OTHER HAND, IF the Church ever once again allowed (as it was in the Early Church and still is in the Eastern Church), the ordination of already-married laymen, it will be under conditions NO LESS STRINGENT than those under which married men of mature age are presently allowed to become permanent deacons (1 Corinthians 7:17-24). In fact, in the document Ultimus Temporibus (issued November 30, l967) a report was given on two formulas, concerning the Law of Priestly Celibacy, that were considered at that particular Bishops' Synod. "Formula B" (receiving the minority vote at the time) reads:

It belongs solely to the Supreme Pontiff, by reason of pastoral needs and the good of the universal Church, to allow the priestly ordination of married men, who are of mature age and proven life.

Although many of the individuals such as Padovano, predominantly creatures of the l960's and l970's, who were laicized because they got married are now of a "mature" age, they certainly are not of a proven life. In promoting their cause, they have repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to align themselves with other groups that promote dissent with Magisterial teachings and directives, primarily those concerning the ordination of women, and abortion, contraception, and sexual matters in general. In addition, Padovano has advocated an "impeachment process" for the Pope (1)

At The Hague, where Padovano sat on a panel alongside Frances Kissling [head of the pro-abortion organization Catholics for a Free Choice---an organization that was formally denounced by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) in 1993]), as part of a UN-sponsored conference of NGO's held prior to the Cairo+5 Conference on Population and Development, he criticized the Church’s participation at the 1994 Cairo Conference, because the Church spoke out against "....Cairo’s unwillingness to condemn contraception and abortion...." (2) These actions are only a few examples of the type of insolence exhibited toward the Magisterium of the Pastors of the Church [the only true and certain ‘expert in humanity’ (cf Sollicitudo rei Socialis, element 41)].

Anthony Padovano (CORPUS) and Frances Kissling ("Catholics" For A Free Choice) attacking the Church and the Pope at The Hague in 1999

The caption under the picture reads as follows:
"Some at the UN meeting claimed to represent the Church though dissenting from Church teaching on abortion. Frances Kissling (above), President of Catholics for a Free Choice, which supports abortion, was among these. Here she is shown with American professor Anthony Padovano, a former priest, at a workshop."

As you can see, there is no level to which he won’t stoop. In fact, at a conference at Emory University held July 28-August 1, 1999 Padovano said, "If there were a readmission of noncanonical priests and nothing else was changed, why would I go back (3) if I would have to be silenced on every other issue of reform?"; He furthermore said that, "a truncated ministry like that would be unbearably oppressive." He furthermore indicated that there is "virtual unanimity" among the members of CORPUS on that point (4). Those "other" issues of reform, of course, include changing Church teachings on abortion, contraception, women’s ordination, homosexuality, and the role and authority of the Papacy, to name only a few.

The "virtual unanimity" described above thus explains why Padovano signed, along with Theresa Lackamp, an Open Letter to Pope John Paul II placed in the September 6, 1994, edition of the New York Times and sponsored by Catholics Speak Out (CSO) and other groups promoting disunity (5) within the Church just before the opening of the UN Cairo Conference on Population and Development. A few days earlier, on September 2, 1994, CORPUS (of which Padovano was then still President) was a co-signer, along with other "Catholic" organizations that promote disunity (6), of an Open Letter in the New York Times to President Clinton, which supported the Administration’s endorsement of the originally-proposed Cairo Plan and openly ridiculed the Magisterium and the Pope, essentially portraying them as obstructionist.

More recently, CORPUS has been one of the groups that has endorsed the See Change campaign (click HERE for further information), sponsored by primarily anti-life groups, that was begun after the 1999 Cairo+5 Conference to try to revoke the Vatican’s official observer status at the UN. Given the Church’s role as an "expert in humanity" on many other pro-life (ie, peace and justice) issues besides just abortion and contraception, there may be some question as to who the obstructionists actually are. The "Catholic" obstructionists like Padovano, CORPUS, Call To Action and Catholics For a Free Choice that promote disunity within the Church are overly obsessed with sex, when there are other matters to tend to (and marital relationships, in fact, involve non-sexual matters and activities 99% of the time).

DOES Padovano’s attitude promote solidarity rooted in charity???

NOT HARDLY.

In fact, this insolent lack of charity has sufficiently darkened his intellect so that Padovano has even suggested that Jesus may have been married and had biological children (7). This type of heresy would not even be acceptable to a Protestant of average intelligence and goodwill (cf Galatians 1:7; 1 Timothy 1:4; 4:7; 2 Peter 1:16). Nevertheless, Padovano has put forth these kinds of propositions, no doubt in order to lamely excuse his own lack of chastity [which was to have been practiced in celibacy (cf Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), element 2349)].

Charity and chastity (or lack of those qualities) go hand-in-hand [cf
CCC 2347 (click HERE for further thoughts on this]. Is it any wonder, then, that Padovano has allied himself, as he did at The Hague, with pro-abortion groups that promote a culture of death, as in Leviticus l8:21, in order to excuse and facilitate unchaste, uncharitable (ie, selfish) practices and lifestyles?? So much for social justice (Ezekiel 16:49;50;Genesis Ch 19) in the Church and in the Modern World. Padovano's attitude, and that of those that are in league with him, is patently unjust and decidedly anti-social

    3. "Go back" Padovano should "go back" to his United Church of Christ congregation (named The Inclusive Community located in Nutley, New Jersey, where he's Pastor). Even Martin Luther had the decency, after starting his own Church, to stay there. Padovano needs to do the same, and leave those who wish to faithfully remain in the Catholic Church alone. He needs to let go of what once was, as well as what will never be. In other words, he should "get a life." Certainly his family and his congregation deserve much more attention than the divided attention he has given it by continuing to dabble (interfere) with the Catholic Church that he used to belong to (since, through his statements and activities, he's ex-communicated himself for all intents and purposes). It is furthermore doubtful that his attitudes and activities are compatible with the ecumenical guidelines and objectives envisioned by Ut Unum Sint and the Directory for the Application of Principles and Norms On Ecumenism on the collaboration with Pastors in the United Church of Christ, given Padovano's predilection for proposing doctrines, and promoting disunity as well as attitudes that are offensive to both Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
